Nigeria currently has 49 Federal Universities. These universities are funded by the federal government. Students choose federal universities over state universities due to the underlisted reasons.


1. Tuition fees are affordable 


Some admission seekers prefer federal universities because they are  affordable. With less than 500k, one can successfully complete a programme in some federal universities rather than state or private universities in Nigeria. Universities such as Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, University of Abuja etc are some of the most affordable universities to study.


2. Facilities 

In terms of infrastructural facilities, federal universities boast of more essential infrastructures, compared to state universities. Facilities such as auditoriums, standard libraries, laboratories, sports grounds, theatres, well-equipped libraries etc can be seen more in federal universities than state universities.

3. Qualified Lecturers 

Federal universities have the most qualified lecturers than state and private universities. They have a higher number of full professors compared to state universities. These are some of the reasons why admission seekers choose  federal government-owned universities over state government-owned universities.

State universities are tertiary institutions owned and controlled by the state government. Nigeria has less than fifty state universities and some of these states have more than one state Universities. Payment of staff salaries, revitalisation of universities among others are handled by the irrespective state governments.

Over the past few years, private universities have outranked public universities but in national and international ranking of universities. In 2021, according to the National Universities Commission, about nine universities making the top 20 list of best universities are private universities. 

Private universities are known for its uninterrupted academic calendar, easier to gain admission, high level of security, improved students and staff welfare, well equipped laboratories, sports facilities, safe and conducive learning classrooms etc. These are just one of few reasons private universities are among  Nigeria's best universities. 

Prior to 2022, Nigeria had a total of 99 private universities, until twelve new universities were added in the first half of 2022, making it a total of 111 universities.
