Nigeria has the highest number of tertiary institutions not only in West Africa but in the entire Africa. The giant of Africa boasts of about one hundred and eighty-two approved universities, comprising private, state and federal universities. 


Due to the continuous, ever-increasing number of admission seekers in Nigeria, tertiary institutions of learning were and are still being established to accommodate candidates wanting to get into higher institutions of learning. 


Out of almost one hundred and eighty-two approved universities in Nigeria, the federal government owns forty-three of the universities while the state government controls about forty-seven of them.


Apart from the government-owned universities, there are about a hundred varsities established and controlled by private individuals and religious organisations.


However, it's interesting to know that Nigerian universities are becoming known globally. In recent years, Nigerian universities are seen on the top list of world best universities with the likes of Howard, Cambridge Universities etc. The ranking of global universities are evaluated by foreign-based rankers such as Times Higher Education among others.


But this article is solely centered on Nigerian Universities. We will be looking at the top ten best universities in Nigeria according to the National Universities Commission, NUC.


In a bid know more about the relative performance of the universities and 

their programmes in order to direct the career choices by students etc, the National University Commission found it imperative to rank Nigerian universities on an annual basis.


The NUC adopted about twelve methods for its ranking. Some of the indicators used for ranking universities are accreditation status of programmes, student-teacher ratio, percentage of full professors, percentage of international staff, efficiency, google scholar presence, and percentage of universities graduates who have contributions to the knowledge economy etc.

So, without further ado, below are the 10 best universities in Nigeria currently. 


1. University of Ibadan


University of Ibadan is if no doubt one of the pioneer universities in Nigeria. The Institution also competes with other world-class universities.


University of Ibadan boasts of over ten faculties which includes medicine, agriculture, education, arts etc. The varsity has, over the years, maintained top spot when it comes to standard and efficiency. 


The ivory tower has also produced almost a hundred notable alumni, some of which includes the governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, Woke Soyinka, an award-winning novelist and the General Superintendent of Deeper Christian Life Ministry, William Kumuyi.


University of Ibadan is among the top three ivory towers with the highest number of full professors and  also among the top fifty Nigerian universities with highest accredited programmes. 


2. Redeemer's University


The second best University in Nigeria currently is the Redeemers University. Redeemers universities is one of the best tertiary institutions owned by a religious organization. The varsity which was established in 2005, has over the years produced great scholars. 


The names of the current vice Chancellor and Chancellor of the ivory tower are  Anthony Enisan Akinlo and Mr Theophilus Danjuma respectively. 


The varsity, which is situated in Ede, Osun State, Southwest of Nigeria, was founded by Redeemed Christian Church of God, a renowned denominational and mega church in Africa. 


Redeemer's University runs both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The University boasts of over ten faculties which includes Medical Sciences, Law, Engineering, Management Science, Accounting among others.


3. Convenant University

Convent University is arguably worthy to be among the top five best Universities in Nigeria. Covenant University which is one of the most popular private Nigeria universities is a church-owned institution situated in Ota, Ogun State, Southwest of Nigeria.


The University is founded by Pastor David Oyedepo, the general overseer of the Living Faith Church Worldwide. Sometime In 2019, CU emerged as the first Nigerian University to be ranked in the top 401-500 category of global universities by Times Higher Education. 


4. Ladoke Akintola University of Technology


Ladoke Akintola University of Technology ranked fourth position on the list of top ten best universities. 


This is the second public University that tops the list of Nigeria's top ten universities. Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, LAUTECH, is situated in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, South West Nigeria. The ivory tower was founded in April 1990. The varsity has over ten faculties with over forty accredited programmes. 


In terms of universities with high efficiency, a measure of student completion rate, LAUTECH sits among the top seven state universities in the South West geo-political zone.


5. Federal University of Technology, Akure


The Federal University of Technology Akure, founded in Ondo State in 1981. It stands as the fifth best university in Nigeria. The University which is run by the Federal Government, has over the years, raised great men such as Godman Akinlabi, the Senior Pastor of The Elevation Church and Ndubuisi Ekekwe, a renowned Professor and Author.


FUTA, one of the few top ranking Universities of technology specialises in producing graduates with practical and theoretical knowledge of technologies. The ivory tower also ranks on NUC's top five federal universities in the South West zone with the highest percentage of foreign staff.


6. Afe Babalola University


Afe Babalola University is a private University. This institution occupies the sixth position of best Universities in Nigeria. The University sometime in 2022, emerged the best University in Nigeria, according to THE World Ranking. 


Afe Babalola University is also among the top five best Nigerian Universities in terms of contribution to the knowledge economy. Graduates from this University have contributed tremendously to the development of the country in their various professions. 


7. University of Ilorin


One university that has always topped the list of best Nigeria Universities is the University of Ilorin. This South West University occupies the 7th position of best universities in Nigeria. 


This citadel of learning offers a wide range of postgraduate and undergraduate courses with ample career opportunities


UNILORIN was established sometime in 1975 as one of the second generation public tertiary institutions. It's one of the most popular universities in Nigeria


The varsity is known for its stable academic calendar, standard facilities, affordability and qualified lecturers. Students seeking admission into this institution are urged to score higher to be  admitted because the varsity is a highly competitive one. About a hundred thousand candidates seek admission into the institution annually.


8. Babcock University


When It comes to Nigerian universities with beautiful campuses, environments and universities with the most foreign staff among others, Babcock University is among them. This is one of the Nigerian universities with the highest number of foreign students as well.  They have a high rating when it comes to academic standards.


The renowned ivory tower is ranked on the eight position on the list of best universities in Nigeria. Prominent figures such as David Adeleke, Alex Usifo among others, are some alumni who attended the institution. 


Babcock University which is a private Christian co-educational Nigerian university is controlled by the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The institution was founded in September 1959. It's situated at Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State. 


9. Landmark University


Landmark University is the ninth best university in Nigeria. This private Christian university, which is affiliated with the Living Faith Church Worldwide is situated in Omu-Aran, Kwara State. Landmark University, In the year 2014, was featured among the ten top universities in Nigeria by Webometrics. 


The University boasts of about five faculties, namely; science and engineering, business and social sciences, engineering among others.


10. Edo University


Founded in 2016, Edo State University, Uzairue is a state government-owned University.  The citadel of learning is located in Etsako West local government area of Edo State.


This is one of the prestigious universities in Nigeria. It offers both bachelor's, Master's degrees.


Edo University was also ranked among the top twenty Nigerian universities with the highest percentage of student-teacher ratio. It's among the top few public universities with the highest female students’ enrolment rate and the most expensive state government-owned university in Nigeria.
