Olukemi Nelson (9 February 1956 – 17 July 2022) a.k.a Yeye Sewa of Lagos was born in Lagos State, Nigeria. She was a renowned politician and socialite. Mrs Nelson was appointed by president Muhammadu Buhari to serve as the Executive Director of the Nigerian Insurance Social Trust Fund (NSITF) from 2019 – 2022.

Kemi Nelson Educational Background


For her Secondary Education, Mrs Nelson went to Anglican Girls Grammar School in Ijebu-Ode before proceeding to study at the school of Nursing in the University College Hospital in Ibadan where she got certified as a Nurse and Midwife.

She further proceeded her Education, bagged an MBA in Financial Management and also Diploma in Law from the Lagos State University.

Sometime in 1998, during the administration of the then head of state, General Abacha, Kemi Nelson competed for the Ikeja Federal Constituency at the house of assembly where she won as a member under the UNCP, but the election was later truncated due to the death of General Sani Abacha.

Kemi Nelson was the only female Member of Ahmed Bola Tinubu governance advisory council in Lagos State. She was the South West women Zonal leader of the All progressive Congress.

From 1999–2003, Mr Olukemi Nelson was appointed by Bola Ahmed Tinubu to serve as the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.

In June 2022, Kemi Nelson, the National Matron of the Asiwaju Women Cooperative Society (AWCS), charged women who are yet to register with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to do so ahead of the 2023 Presidential election to ensure Bola Tinubu’s victory at the contest.

On 30th September, 2021, The National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN) reportedly dismissed the suit that was jointly filed by Mr Adebayo Somefun, former Managing Director, the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF), and Kemi Nelson, challenging their suspension in July 2020. Justice Olufunke Anuwe, who delivered the judgment, dismissed the suit, saying it has no merit.

On her 66th birthday, President Buhari sent a birthday message to Kemi Nelson. In a statement issued by his spokesman, Alhaji Garba Shehu, reads in part; “ Nigeria takes pride in the many accomplishments of the women of our nation. It is our Party’s honour to have leaders such as Kemi Nelson in our midst,”

Chief Mrs. Kemi Nelson, and some other notable women in South West Nigeria such as Adejoke Adefulire, Mrs Sarah Sosan, Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat was presented Awards in an event held in May 2022 by the Lagos State Chapter of Women for SWAGA 23, a political group in support of the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu presidential bid.

Mrs Kemi Nelson threw her weight behind a prayer rally organised for the presidential ambition of Bola Tinubu which took place on January 12, 2022, in Ikeja. She told journalists saying “the prayer initiative is the right step in a good direction, because whatever will succeed will first start with God. God’s guidance, support, direction and help is crucial in this journey to Aso Rock in 2023.”

In early January 2017, Kemi Nelson played host to hordes of her political colleagues at her home in Ikeja during her annual New Year shindig in 2017. Her supporters and well-wishers as well as notable politicians such as Adedamola Richard Kasunmu, who was representing Ikeja Constituency II in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Babatunde Oke, Tayo Aderinola, Funso Ologunde etc were present.

Kemi Nelson denied receiving N75 million from Senator Remi Tinubu to organise a rally against Senator Dino Melaye over a recent incident at the senate. Mrs Nelson in a statement she signed said she denied collecting any money from Remi Tinubu or her husband, Bola Tinubu to organise a rally. She promised to participate fully in a rally that would be staged by a group of women on July 20 2016 in Abuja to protest the alleged assault on Senator Tinubu by Sen. Dino Melaye.

Nelson was among the keynote speakers who encouraged women to collectively fight the scourge of poverty by being empowered with the set skills that will challenge the status quo at a special International Women’s Day Conference which took place at the Civic Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos on the 9th of March 2016. The conference was organized by Rubies Vocational School and SME 100 Nigeria.

Late Mrs Kemi Nelson was married to Mr Adeyemi Nelson who was Director of the Federal Ministry of Internal Affairs. They have been married for 41 years. They couple have three children.

Mr Adeyemi Nelson had been a supportive and caring husband to her. They had been one of the most admired celebrity couples. During her 65th birthday, Mrs Nelson, alongside her husband and children were present with other invited guests to celebrate her new age. 

Kemi Nelson Death

On 17 July 2022, Kemi Nelson died following a brief illness. She died at the age of 66. Mr. Seye Oladejo, an All Progressives Congress Spokesman in Lagos who confirmed her demise, described her exit as, “very sad and tragic.”

President Muhammadu Buhari also mourned with the family of Kemi Nelson over her death. The president described Mrs Nelson as a faithful party member who devoted most of her time to the evolution, development, sustenance and relevance of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Lagos and within the country.
